Upstate Music Therapy Center, LLC has been providing quality music therapy services to special needs children in the greater Rochester area since 1993.  Our Music Therapists have received their training at accredited universities and passed the National Board Certification exam.  Upstate Music Therapy Center was developed for the sole purpose of providing services for children’s needs and was inspired with the knowledge that all children are special and have unique talents, whatever their disability.

Our agency is also committed to providing support to parents and families of these children using care-based interactions for creating therapeutic plans, sharing progress and consulting, as appropriate.  Those individuals who receive services range from infants to young adults up to the age of 21 years old.

Our sessions are conducted in pre-schools, elementary and high schools, center-based programs, childcare centers, homes and at our center in Penfield, NY.  Both individual and group therapy is offered, as well as assessments.  Most of the children we serve have music therapy designated on their IEP, for which the school district oversees.  For other children, parents contract directly with our agency, paying privately for their child’s therapy.  Our newest program, Music Explorers, is created for children under the age of 3 years old with or without special needs and their parent or guardian.  The groups are conducted on a semester basis throughout the year.

What is music therapy?  “Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.” (American Music Therapy Association – AMTA)  Our established healthcare profession uses music to address non-musical goals of individuals, such as physical, emotional, cognitive, social, and communication.  Not only does music therapy meet the needs of clients, but music also works to improve their quality of life.
