abilitYoga was started by a team of two experienced occupational therapists to provide unique adaptive yoga therapy for children with special needs, either developmental disabilities or special healthcare needs, in the metropolitan Rochester, New York area. Our motto is to put ABILITY first! In particular, we focus on providing child-centered individualized yoga services as a complementary therapy for children of all ages and levels. Our treatment is designed to help children attain optimal functional performance across a variety of environments. Our prior work experiences as pediatric occupational therapists serve as an excellent background to develop a holistic approach to use the practice of yoga to address individual needs and to accommodate mild to severe delays in cognitive, social-emotional, communication, and motor areas.
Relative Motion Yoga
RELATIVE MOTION offers group and individual children’s yoga classes in the Rochester area. Our main focus is helping children develop increased body awareness through movement. Through gross and fine motor activity, yoga may help integrate postural reflexes resulting in not only increased flexibility, but also improved learning and emotional health. Our classes feature traditional yoga poses infused with story and games. Poses are selected for their ability to calm and/or give the body new opportunities to stretch and strengthen.
Parent testimonial: "We are just so pleased with the work that Cindi has done with our 6 year old daughter who is on the Spectrum. Yoga is a great benefit to all children, but it can be especially helpful to children who have issues with self- regulation and body/self-awareness. Cindi offers a gentle, kind and often playful Yoga practice, which has helped our little girl to become calmer and more confident about herself."
